Echo and Narcissus is a myth from Ovid's Metamorphoses, a Latin mythological epic from the Augustan Age. The introduction of the myth of the mountain nymph Echo into the story of Narcissus, the beautiful youth who rejected sexuality and falls in love with his own reflection, appears to have been Ovid's invention.
The myth explains the echo, which science has since explained to be caused by sound waves reverberating off nearby objects. In the myth, a young girl (or nymph is some cases) named Echo is gifted by Aphrodite with a beautiful voice and with the power of persuasion. Unfortunately, she uses this gift to trick Hera and is cursed with the inability to say anything original, to only repeat what others say. When she falls in love with Narcicus and is rejects, she prays fervently to Aphrodite who says that she will forever be a voice heard by all
