The ratio of boys to girls in a group is 3:1. If there are 28 more boys than girls, work out how many people there are in total.

Then, according to text
B=3G {1} and
B=G+28 {2}
Substitute {1}->{2} :
3G=G+28 or 2G=28, or G=14
so B=3G=3*14=42
