Sam has twice as many books as Jim. If Sam gives 12 books to Jim, they will have the same number of books. How many books do they have altogether?

The number of books Jim has be [tex] J [/tex].

Given,

[tex] S=2J [/tex]

If Sam gives 12 books to Jim,

[tex] S-12=J+12\\
2J-12=J+12\\
J=24
S=48 [/tex]

So they together have [tex] 24+48=72 [/tex] books.
