The U.S government is divided into three different branches: the Executive, the legislative and the judicial. When the legislative branch, which is the responsible for creating legislation, passes a bill by a majority of the vote, it goes to the President who decides whether to sign it into law or to reject it (that is, to veto it).

If the President uses his power to veto the bill, then the bill is sent back to the Legislative branch who has a chance to override the presidential veto by 2/3 vote of both houses of the Congress. if it is overridden, the bill becomes a law without the President's signature.
