The species canis lupus most typically refers to the Gray Wolf, but actually it also involves the dog (Canis lupus familiaris) and the dingo (canis lupus dingo) and one can say canis lupus lupus to specifically mean the wolf.
The closest relative of the wolf is the dog, but if you see them as the same species, then it's actually Coyote- Canis latrans.
