Expain why this problem CANNOT be solved by subtracting 2/3- 1/3


Lauren has 2/3 of a foot of ribbon. She cuts off 1/3 of an inch ribbon. How much ribbon does Lauren have now

It can't be solved that way because you first have to find what 2/3 of a foot of ribbon which is 8. she then cuts of a third of an inch, so you have to subtract 1/3 from 8, leaving you with about 7.6.
