Portugal began what became known as the Age of Discovery, in the mid-1400s. The most western country in Europe, Portugal was the first country to significantly investigate the Atlantic Ocean, colonize the Azores and other neighbouring islands, then hit the west coast of Africa. In 1488, Portuguese voyagers Bartolomeu Dias was the first person to sail around the southern tip of Africa, and in 1498 his compatriot Vasco da Gama reiterated the experiment, making it as far away as India. Portugal would build ports as far east as Japan, as far west as Brazil, and along the coasts of India, Africa, and China.

The exhibition, “Encompassing the Globe: Portugal and the World in the 16th & 17th Centuries," is the largest in Sackler today, with around 250 objects from more than 100 investors seizing the whole museum and spilling into the adjacent National Museum of Africa.
