In 1488, Portuguese voyagers Bartolomeu Dias was the first person to sail around the southern tip of Africa, and in 1498 his compatriot Vasco da Gama reiterated the experiment, making it as far away as India. Portugal would build ports as far east as Japan, as far west as Brazil, and along the coasts of India, Africa, and China.
