Why are unit trains more efficient than mixed freight trains?

Unit train cargo uniformly goes from location A to B, while mixed train cargo is mixed in delivery, from point A to B, but also A to C, etc. Unit trains are more efficient because no extra time is needed to detach cars to send to other locations.
