What he wanted to do by calling Islam the "religion of peace" was to make people understand that Islam was not a religion of violence and terror just because the terrorists were Islamic.

Islam is called the religion of peace because the teaching under the Islam holy books invites people to live a peaceful life that should be based upon theism, justice, and purity. Although the nature of Islam is towards the war and they are the defensive one instead of being offensive. This is taught in their principles for peace and coexistence.
