It also recognizes Freedom of Religion and religious association and denies the government power to establish any religion. The First Amendment also recognized freedom to assembly and protest.

But, there are many controversies that surround the freedoms offered by the First Amendment.

In matters of free speech, while the government cannot abridge a citizen's freedom, the citizen is not free to utter obscene, fraudulent, plagiarized, and libelous speeches, including issuing threats.

To assemble and engage in protests, citizens must do so for lawful purposes and not to cause property loss. Religious freedom does not guarantee the castigation of others' belief systems.

Thus, the freedoms offered by the First Amendment are not absolute. They must be exercised within lawful limits.
