What is the fifth step in a diatonic scale

The diatonic scale has seven tones. Five are whole steps, and two are 1/2 steps. The fifth note is "So," as in Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti, Do. Which steps go where would depend on whether your scale was major or minor. this should help
