After conquering North Africa, the Ummayad Caliphate proceeded to conquer Spain. This conquest took place from 711 to 788 AD. The long-fought war of expansion completely destroyed the existing Visigothic Kingdom, founding the independent Emirate of Całrdoba in its place. This Emirate was overseen by Abd ar-Rahman I, a man who finished the unification of Muslim-ruled Iberia. This war was the furthest West that Muslim rule ever extended into Europe.
