A real estate agent received a 6% commission on the selling price of a house. If his commission was $8,880, what was the selling price of the house?

Use proportion 
106 % = x + 8,800           where x is the selling price
100 %  = x

so  106 / 100  = 1.06 = (x + 8800) / x

1.06x = x + 8800
0.06x = 8800
x = 8800 / 0.06  =  $146,666.67
