In my opinion, Europe in the nineteenth ad twentieth century is like two nations, just like the European Union today. Britain and France + Spain are the dominant countries at that time. Also, the technology in Europe was developing at a rapid pace thanks to advanced countries like Germany and later the Industrial Revolution. Lastly, Europe has a long history when compared to the US, allowing it to be more experienced. It also starts off with a prosperous economy, stable population and diverse culture.
