Gender roles refer to refers to expectations regarding how to speak and act by men and women. Every ethnic group, society and cultural group has certain gender role expectations.
As for in the above instance women were considered fragile and weak and that's why they were asked to perform a simple task which does not involve any act of bravery. Whereas, men were considered strong and bold where they were asked to perform acts of bravery by hunting.
