According to Aristotle, Tragedy should stay tragic, Comedy should be comic, and never should they mix. Tragedy was to invoke emotions of sadness and sympathy for the tragic hero in the audience, while comedy was to be used for levity and merriment, but also to teach the people lessons.

However, while tragedy uses the protagonists misfortunes to teach the audience about life, comedy uses ridiculous exaggerations to make a point. Unlike with tragedy, where the extraneous was not allowed, comedy always uses exaggeration. Also, whereas tragedy was the events and stories of nobles, comedy was typically put on by the average person.
