Why are some islands in the Caribbean called the greater Antilles and others called the lesser Antilles?

The Greater Antilles is a grouping of the larger islands in the Caribbean Sea: Cuba,Hispaniola (containing Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and the Cayman Islands.

Why some islands are called greater Antilles and others the lesser Antilles is because the greater Antilles have bigger islands than the lesser Antilles.
