According to Kohlberg's theory, there are three stages—each with two stages—to moral development. According to Kohlberg, moral development is connected to cognitive development, and humans go through these stages in a precise order. The three stages of moral thought are preconventional, conventional, and postconventional.
By analyzing children's responses to various moral quandaries, Kohlberg showed that the reasoning behind a decision was a stronger measure of moral development than the actual answer.
In general, Lawrence Kohlberg (1958) agreed with Piaget's (1932) theory of moral development, although he sought to expand on it. He told people morally complex tales using Piaget's storytelling technique.
