What makes remarriage common among Whites?
The rise in the number of white women is the only factor driving the rising prevalence of remarriage among whites. By 2012, 55% of divorced or widowed white women had remarried, up from 47% in 1960. In comparison, over the same time period, the proportion of white men who had previously been married and remarried fell from 69% to 66%. In comparison to 1960, men and women were less likely to remarry across all other racial and ethnic groupings in 2012. In contrast, Hispanic, Black, and Asian individuals who had previously been married are less likely than in the past to have remarried.
