Slavery was the social problem that gave rise to sectionalism.
The issue of slavery may have caused more conflict between the constitutional issues Northern and Southern states than any other philosophical difference. Northerners largely tolerated it as long as it persisted in the South, despite their claims to the contrary. The slave states opposed the Civil War increased representation of the free states in Congress because they thought that the legislature would outlaw constitutional issues slavery. Equally concerned were the slave states about the free states.
