What is Unconditional Positive Regard?
Unconditional positive regard is the fundamental acceptance and support of a person, regardless of what the person says or does, especially in the context of client-centered therapy. The idea was first developed by Stanley Standal in 1954 and later expanded and popularised by the humanistic psychologist Carl Rogers in 1956. According to humanistic psychologists, unconditional positive regard means showing someone you care about them no matter what they do or say. Empathy, unwavering admiration, congruence, and attitude over skill are a few of them. Positive respect, praise, and approval are conditional on the child, for instance, acting in a way that the parents deem appropriate. As a result, the child is not appreciated for who they are but rather for what they can do.
