United Airlines Flight 232, which had 297 passengers and crew on board, experienced the breakup of its number 2 engine (in the tail area) at 15:15 on July 19, 1989, while the aircraft was 40000 feet over Alta, Iowa (Map 1).
The DC-10 was diverted to the Gateway Airport in Sioux City, Iowa while traveling from Denver to Chicago. The damaged aircraft crashed down on an empty runway, disintegrating upon contact and catching fire. The two Sioux City hospitals, two local and regional paramedic and fire units, an advanced life-support EMS helicopter service, and local crash-fire-rescue (CFR) units from the Air National Guard stationed at Gateway Airport were on alert and prepared as a result of the early warning of the potential crash. The fire was battled by firefighters and members of the Air National Guard.They brought injured people to nearby Sioux City medical centers after the accident. Critically injured victims were taken to the hospital first, then those with less severe wounds.
