Gatsby get his wealth because the abundance of wealth in this story is a little disgusting to read; the lavishness of the parties and the sprawling mansions.
I think the scene where Gatsby is throwing his shirts at Daisy and she starts crying is just hysterical. It seems so obvious when reading it now that all of this is fleeting, because none of it sounds sustainable.
