Explain neuroimaging.

The term "neuroimaging" refers to the use of quantitative (computational) methods to the investigation of the anatomy and physiology of the central nervous system. It was created as a non-invasive, scientific method for the objective investigation of the normal human brain. Quantitative investigations of brain disorders and psychiatric illness are increasingly being conducted using it as well. Since it is not a medical specialty, neuroimaging is a very interdisciplinary area of research.

Although its exact function is still hotly contested, the hippocampus has long been associated with mnemonic function. The dynamic aspect of human memory can be examined in vivo using neuroimaging methods including positron emission tomography, functional magnetic resonance imaging, and structural MRI. According to functional and structural neuroimaging results, the right hippocampus plays a role in navigation that is similar to that which has been observed in animals. On the other hand, episodic memories, which make up a person's personal, or autobiographical, memory store from throughout their lifetime, are more responsive to the left hippocampus than other types of memories.
