2y - 4 + y = 26

3y - 4 = 26

3y = 26 + 4

3y = 30

y = 10

if y = 10, then

x = 2y - 4 = 2(10) -4 = 16

therefore,

x = 16 and y =10

to check

x + y = 26

16 + 10 = 26

26 = 26 OK
