Simplifying an equation

In order to simplify the equation

3(2p - 5) - 6p

We are going to follow two steps:

1. find an equal expression but that does not have parenthesis

2. combine like terms

Step 1

In order to take off the parenthesis

3(2p - 5)

we use the distributive property of the multiplication.

We multiply 3 by each term of (2p - 5):

3(2p - 5) = 3 · 2p - 3 · 5

= 6p - 15

Then

3(2p - 5) - 6p = 6p - 15 - 6p

Step 2

We want to find the like terms (terms with the same unkown variable):

terms with p: 6p and -6p

terms without any unkown variable: -15

Now, we add them:

6p - 15 - 6p = 0p - 15

= -15

Answer- 3(2p - 5) - 6p = -15
