What is social learning?
The social learning theory holds that people pick up social manners through seeing and imitating the behavior of others.The social learning theory was created by psychologist Albert Bandura as an alternative to the earlier work of behaviorism-inspiring colleague B.F. Skinner. In contrast to behavioral psychology, which focuses on how the environment and rewards influence behavior, Bandura argued that people can pick up behavioral skills through observation.
Four mediational processes from the social learning theory are used to assess if a new behavior is learned:
The extent to which we pay attention to the actions Before we can copy a behavior, it must first get our attention. The sheer quantity of behaviors we witness every day but do not imitate suggests that attention is essential in determining whether a behavior promotes imitation.
Retention: The degree to which we can recall the action. If we can't recall the activity, we can't conduct the behavior. Therefore, even though a behavior may be observed, the observer won't engage in it unless a memory is created. Retention is crucial to behavior modeling because social learning takes time.
Reproduction: The capacity to carry out the action. This is the capacity to duplicate a behavior that we see. It affects whether or not we decide to try out the habit.
Motivation : Willingness to adopt the behavior as one's own. The term used to describe this mediation process is Vicarious reinforcement. Instead of learning directly from experience, it entails monitoring how decisions affect other people.
