Complex Fractions
Also known as mixed fractions, complex fractions have three parts: an integer part a numerator, and a denominator.
The fraction
[tex]3\frac{1}{2}[/tex]
Can be converted to a simple fraction by adding the integer to the fraction as follows:
[tex]3\frac{1}{2}=3+\frac{1}{2}=\frac{6+1}{2}=\frac{7}{2}[/tex]
The system has a water leak that makes it lose 7/2 milliliters of water every 18 minutes.
To find the change of the amount of water per minute, we divide:
[tex]\frac{\frac{7}{2}}{18}=\frac{7}{2\cdot18}=\frac{7}{36}[/tex]
The change is -7/36 milliliters per minute
