Bone remodeling is the ongoing balance between osteoclasts and osteoblasts breaking down and resynthesizing bone.

What role do osteoclasts and osteoblasts play in the maintenance of healthy and strong bones?

Osteoblasts regenerate bone while osteoclasts degrade it. Throughout a person's life, bones are continually replaced, but as we age, this process becomes slower. From childhood through adolescence, the body can replace old bone more quickly than it can generate new bone. This promotes bone density, or bone mass.

What does bone resorption entail?

Osteoclasts remove hard bone tissue during the resorption (remodeling) process, and osteoblasts then lay down new bone cells. Resorption allows calcium to be released and restores bone microdamage brought on by everyday wear and tear.
