Average Speed
The average speed can be calculated as the total distance traveled by the total time taken to do so:
[tex]\bar{v}=\frac{x}{t}[/tex]The total distance is the sum of the individual distances traveled at different speeds for different times.
Distance 1: 2 hours at 80 km/h
[tex]x_1=2\cdot80=160\text{ }\operatorname{km}[/tex]Distance 2: 3 hours at 70 km/h
[tex]x_2=3\cdot70=210km[/tex]The total distance is: x = 160 km + 210 km = 370 km
The total time is t = 2 h + 3 h = 5 h
Now calculate the average speed:
[tex]\begin{gathered} \bar{v}=\frac{370}{5} \\ \bar{v}=74\text{ }\frac{\operatorname{km}}{h} \end{gathered}[/tex]The average speed was 74 km/h
