I have a 3 gallon container, and a 5 gallon container. However, I need exactly 4 gallons of water! I cannot fill up the containers part way, unless I am pouring one into the other. I cannot pour in 1 gallon at a time, as I have no way to tell how much one gallon is! I also have unlimited water, so I can fill and dump water as many times as I want. Using only two containers I have, how can I get 4 gallons?

Respuesta :

The volume of water that would be left in the 5 gallon container will be 4 gallons.

Measurement

From the question, we are to determine how to get 4 gallons from a 3 gallon container and a 5 gallon container

To get 4 gallons,

First, fill the 5 gallon container to the brim with water. Pour all the water into the 3 gallon container.

Thus,

We have 2 gallons remaining in the 5 gallon container.

Now, pour the content of the 3 gallons out. Then, add the 2 gallons remaining inside the 5 gallon container into the empty 3 gallon container.

Note that it would remain 1 gallon of water to fill the 3 gallon container.

Now,

Fill the 5 gallon container again to the brim. Pour from the filled 5 gallon container into the 3 gallon container and make it up to the brim. Then, we would have poured 1 gallon of water from the 5 gallon container.

Therefore, we would have (5 -1) gallons of water remaining in the 5 gallon container.

Hence, the volume of water that would be left in the 5 gallon container will be 4 gallons.
