The expansion of deeply buried rocks after they are exposed by erosion causes the formation of Fractures which reduce the strength of the rock.
Fractures along which rock has slipped relative to the other side are called faults, whereas fractures that are simple cracks where the rock has pulled apart by a small amount are joints. Any fracture or system of fractures along which Earth moves is known as a fault. Faults allow the blocks to move relative to each other which results to an earthquake.
When deeply buried rocks are uncovered by erosion, the removal of weight allows them to relax and expand. Produces fractures and increases in porosity. This stress-relaxation process reduces the strength of rocks, opening up passageways/storage places for water to attack and further weaken the rocks.
