When people are pushed in different directions while attempting to respond to the many positions they hold, they experience role conflict. Role conflict can be a result of situational experiences and can last for a short length of time or a long amount of time.
Every person holds roles in life and every role carries with it implied responsibilities and assumptions. When considering the role conflict definition, the focus is on scenarios where contradictory responsibilities between roles (or within a single role) cause difficulty for the role holder.
There are two main types:
Inter-role Conflict: Conflict occurring between two or more roles.
Intra-role Conflict: Conflict stemming from incompatibilities within a single role and the person's beliefs/attitudes.
