The process through which the traits of individuals of immigrant groups and host communities become to resemble one another is called assimilation.

Gordon model of assimilation has seven phases of assimilation: Cultural or behavioural assimilation, structural assimilation, marital assimilation, identificational assimilation, attitude receptional assimilation, behaviour receptional assimilation, and civic assimilation.

According to Gordon (1978), civic assimilation is the lack of value and power struggle. When group members "do not raise their demands about the character of (the host) public or civic life any concerns involving values and power clash with (host members), sort of assimilation occurs"  He gave instances of birth control, divorce, and abortion.
