Virulence, term interchangeably used with pathogenicity, refers to the degree of pathology caused by the organism. The extent of the virulence is usually correlated with the ability of the pathogen to multiply within the host and may be affected by other factors. Viral virulence is influenced by viral genes in three categories firstly those that affect the ability of the virus to replicate, secondly those that affect host defense mechanisms, Thirdly those that affect tropism, spread throughout the body and transmissibility. Virulence factors characterized as important for attachment and invasion in human infection are CPS, β-hemolysin, C proteins, and pilus-like proteins.
