DuBois believed that the "talented tenth" of the black community will emerge to lead the majority of black people by their intellectual achievements. DuBois, in contrast to Washington, believed that white community's equality was of the utmost significance.

Booker T. Washington:

  • He emphasized on African Americans to be wealthier by improving their education in order to end segregation.
  • In his view this  approval will give people more respect and help them get better job opportunities .
  • He emphasized on higher education and being independent so that there can be equality.
  • His views were based on handling the situation calmly by uplifting the people.
  • For him gaining economic independence and respectability were of greater significance than fighting for civil rights through forceful means.

W.E.B DuBois:

  • He believed African Americans should protest for ill treatment and demand for  equal rights and opportunities.
  • In his views protesting is the option asking for equal rights.
  • He believed that whites will never accept black no matter if they are educated or not.
  • So for him rather than focusing on economic independence and respectability he suggested working more on the protest part.
