The rabied dog is said to have been murdered by Atticus due to the fact that the sheriff request that from him in regards to taking the shot.
Atticus was known to be strongly against the use of guns and he was known to have taught his children that the use of guns is not really necessary.
When the children discovered that Atticus had a nice shot in his childhood, they believed that it was the reason that he was asked by the sheriff to take the shot.
As he shot the dog, he was said to have overcame the problem that he had with handling guns, and he depicted courage as he even rise to shoot with the gun.
As Mrs Dubous died, the courage is said to have been seen or depicted by the children, especially Scout as she need not go to the house with her brother all the time.
Note that After her death, the children were said to have learned that Atticus has made them go to her house after school all the time because he already knows that she was going to die and she deserved a person to be by her side as it happened.
