ILS is an acronym for instrument landing system and it can be defined as a precision radio navigation system that is designed and developed to provide an aircraft (airplane) with short-range guidance, so as to enable it approach a runway during bad weather or at night.

Generally, ILS uses two main directional radio signals and these include:

  • The localizer: it uses a frequency of 108 to 112 MHz for horizontal guidance.
  • The glideslope: it uses a frequency of 329.15 to 335 MHz for vertical guidance.
