American consumerism is also built on societal factors that are often overlooked. We have a social impetus to “keep up with the Joneses,” whoever our own version of the Joneses is. And in an increasingly unequal society, the Joneses at the very top are doing a lot of the consuming, while the people at the bottom struggle to keep up or, ultimately, are left fighting for scraps whereas Egyptian consumptions economy expanded 7.7% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of FY 2021 (April–June), according to estimates released by the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development. The reading, which matched the Central Bank’s estimate published in its monetary policy statement on 16 September, followed the 2.9% increase logged in the third quarter of the fiscal year. It marked the strongest growth rate since at least Q4 FY 2008, although it was supported by a low base effect.
