We learn in the prologue that Romeo and Juliet's relationship was doomed from the start. Though the characters made decisions that led to the catastrophe, certain events were out of their control. Had Friar John not been quarantined because of the plague, the couple might still be alive. They were pawns of fate, and they were fated to die so that their families would stop feuding.
