The opposing emotions that Walt Whitman expresses in the poem are:

Emotions of Victory; and
Emotions of Sadness (or Mourning). Lines 13-16 show that the person he is mourning is the captain as well as his father. While it is clear from lines 20 -21, that the objective of the voyage was achieved.
