Consider the two passages you have just read, Oedipus the King by Sophocles and the
myth Perseus told by Edith Hamilton. How do the authors of these two passages
develop the idea that individuals are responsible for the consequences of their own
actions? Be sure to utilize evidence from both texts in creating your response.

The two authors show that if the characters had made different decisions, they would not have suffered the drastic consequences.

Who is Oedipus and Perseus:

  • Perseus was a Greek hero, son of Zeus, and had great strength.
  • These characteristics made him a very arrogant man.
  • He decided to refuse the help of other heroes to fight a monster, which caused him to suffer terrible consequences.
  • Oedipus was a prince.
  • He received a prophecy that he would kill his father.
  • He decides to run away from home to prevent this prophecy from happening.
  • This escape, makes him find his biological father and ends up killing him without knowing it, which causes terrible consequences.

Both authors reinforce the decision made by the characters. Those decisions made fate act for them to take negative actions and establish horrible consequences.
