Let x represent the number of 20 cent ($0.2) coins

i) Since there are 35 coins in total:

Number of 50 cent coins = 35 - x

ii) The total value of the coins is $13.90. Hence:

0.2x + 0.5(35 - x) = 13.90

iii) 0.2x + 17.5 - 0.5x = 13.90

0.3x = 3.6

x = 12

Number of 50 cent coin = 35 - x = 35 - 12 = 23

Therefore there are 12 coins which are 20 cent each and 23 coins which are 50 cent each.
