A thesis statement is the main idea that the speaker presents in his text. The thesis statement in the passage is that culture can affect the mentality of parents in directing the career paths of their children.

The author imagined her brother Bob to be an athlete. Two pieces of evidence to support the thesis that culture played a role in influencing how their parents guided them career-wise are;

1. For the Chua's their culture which was rooted in tradition could be a reason for the kind of training they gave their children. This is seen in this statement;

  • The elder Chua's came from a rich Chinese enclave in the Philippines. Faced with a hostile native population, they circled the wagons and emphasized tradition.

   

2. For the Lin's their culture which promoted athletics could have been a reason why they encouraged Jeremy Lins to become an athlete. This is seen in this statement;

  • In Taiwan, for example, there is an alternative track for college applications. Students can apply via the standard track, emphasizing grades and scores, but they can also apply via a track emphasizing their special gifts or contributions.

These two pieces of evidence provide reasons to explain why the two families encouraged their children to follow different career paths.
