A strongly basic solution with Yamada's universal indicator will depict an Indigo or violet color
Yamada's universal indicator, patented in 1933, by Yamada is a pH indicator produced by combining several compounds ( water, 1-Propanol, phenolphthalein, sodium hydroxide, methyl red, bromothymol blue, Sodium bisulfite, and thymol blue) to estimate acidity and alkalinity of solutions by indicating a clear color change over a wide range of pH values.
Because of the ease in transition of colors from acidity to alkalinity, Many other variations of universal indicators have been produced. Experimenting with Yamada's universal indicator as described in the Journal of Chemical Education,explains that the pH of a solution, after adding the universal indicator, are as follows
- pH range < 3 will depict a red color to indicate presence of a strong acid.
- pH range 3–6 will depict a Orange or Yellow color to indicate the presence of a weak acid.
- pH range 7 will depict a Green color to indicate the presence Neutral solution.
- pH range 8–11 will depict a blue colour to indicate the presence of a weak alkali.
- pH range > 11 will depict an Indigo or violet color to indicate the presence of a Strong alkali .
Note that alkali solution is same as basic solution.
