By previous knowledge, we know that there is a certain species of insects that increases its reproductive rate during summer, and they feed on the roots. This is a very common species, and we always see it in the grass.
So we can make this conjecture. We are not sure, but we think this might be the reason for the grass dying.
The variables are the grass dying and the insects feeding on the roots. The relationship between variables is that Because the insects feed on the roots, the grass is dying.
Note that in both cases, the hypotheses are in the present time, and the relationship between variables is very clear and explicit.
