It’s D. The protagonist doesn’t always have to be a hero (think villain origin stories like Cruella), they don’t always win (think Dear Evan Hansen), and they don’t usually avoid the main conflict because they are the ones who move the story along.

Either coming out as a hero to have happy ending or he has a tragic end making the book a tragedy
