- Because these poor communities had been so disadvantaged, they lacked a lot of the goods they saw in the malls and shops around them and could not afford to get them. When the looting started, they took the opportunity to acquire these goods.
- It also showed their desperation because the police and army were allowed to use lethal force yet the looters kept going to the shops and malls to get the items there. They were desperate enough to have these things that they would risk their lives.
