Chatter means "to talk quickly in a foolish way". Often chatter can be considered an onomatopoeia because it has the same sound as it's meaning. Since a person's chattering is usually deemed as not worth paying attention to, the simple sound of the word can represent its meaning. People sometimes use the word chatter to describe a bunch of birds chirping back and forth in the trees nonstop and creating a lot of noise.
