Permeable means “allowing liquids or gases to pass through it.”

In the image, we can see that the water has travelled to the right side of the beaker but the particles have stayed on the same side (the left side). This means that the membrane is permeable to water but not the particles, because it only allowed the water to travel through it.

It wouldn’t be the evaporation option because we can see that the right side has more water added to it, meaning the water on the left side isn’t gone because it evaporated.

So, I believe the answer is the first option. ‘The membrane is permeable to water, but it is not permeable to to the particles. That is why the water goes to one side but the particles stay where they are already located.’
